TEAM iC: Creating a Welcoming Environment for New Team Members

How do you create a welcoming environment for new team members at the start of the season?

Jaya

I create a welcoming environment for new team members by introducing myself, including them in conversations, and encouraging them during practices. I also try to help them feel comfortable and supported so they can become more confident and contribute their full talent to the team !

Aggie

I know how it feels to be new to a gym or team and to have a lot of questions. Speaking up at practice in front of new coaches and teammates can be scary. One thing I try to do is make sure new athletes know they can always reach out to me outside of practice. Sometimes it’s easier to send a text or message than to ask a question in person. I want people to know that if they need advice, have a question, or just aren’t sure about something, they can always contact me and I’ll do my best to help.

Freddie

At the start of the season, I try to make new team members feel comfortable by talking to them, helping them during training, and making sure they’re included in conversations and team activities. I think it’s important to create a positive and supportive environment from day one so nobody feels left out. I always try to encourage people and help them build confidence as they settle into the team. A strong team starts with everyone feeling welcome and respected.

Roxie

In the beginning of the season being welcoming to new teammates is very important. Some ways I do this is by introducing myself to people I’ve never met and making sure to include everyone. Whether you are doing free tumbling or stunting, cheering others on will help everyone feel confident. Those first couple weeks can be nerve racking but being kind can help ease those nerves and create friendships.

Graham

I create a welcoming environment for new team members at the start of the season by including them in warmups/stretching and asking them questions about themselves.

Riley

I always make an effort to talk with new teammates right away!! Since starting a new season can be intimidating when being surrounded with many unfamiliar faces, I always love to be open and supportive to those that are new!

Cole

As I approach the new cheer season I welcome new teammates by asking to spend time together and rep skills together at the gym! This helps grow the bond between us and help us talk together in an easier way!!

Star

As I begin my senior year, I want to help create a welcoming environment for new team members by encouraging them during practice and making sure they feel included. I know joining a new team can be intimidating, so I want everyone to feel comfortable, supported, and like they belong from day one.

Sienna

I make sure that I am continuously talking ,supporting them, and explaining my first tryout experience to them. I do this because I was lucky enough to have girls who did this for me and made me feel more comfortable trying new things and getting out of my shell when I first made the team I am on now. In doing this, it can help me create a stronger bond with my new teammates and be the person I was so grateful to have guided me throughout the stresses of going to a new gym or team.

Camryn

I create a welcoming environment by introducing myself to the new team members and including them.   I try to be kind, supportive, and encouraging so they feel comfortable and welcome.

Ian

I create a welcoming environment for new team members by being open and friendly. I love meeting new people, so making sure all of my team members are comfortable is always at the top of my list.

Addison

I create a welcoming environment by making sure I talk to new team members and include them right away. I know joining a new team can feel scary at first, so I try to be friendly, helpful, and make them feel like they are already part of the family.

Kylie

During tryouts I always introduce myself to all the new people and try to help them get more comfortable with everyone so they can feel welcomed into our family!! It always helps to have a friend on the first practice and I want to be that person for the new athletes!

Jaydyn

I try to make everyone feel included from day one by talking to new teammates, helping them learn team traditions we do on and off the mat. I think being encouraging, positive, and supportive helps people feel comfortable and confident when it’s their first time with us.

Shelby

I would create a welcoming environment by trying to include everyone from day one and by making them all feel valuable to the team.

Masyn

I always greet new teammates with a big smile and introduce myself so they know they belong. I make sure to include them in warm-ups and practice drills so they feel part of the group right away. I cheer loudly for them when they do something good to build their confidence and show everyone supports them.

Laney

I love meeting new teammates at the start of the season! I like to introduce myself and ask them some questions to help them feel at ease. Plus, I introduce them to my friends, so they can get out there and make more friends.

Kacey

At the start of the season with new team members, I think the best way to create a welcoming environment is to talk to everyone and make them feel comfortable! Also, team bonders are a fun way for the team to get to know each other better.

Ryan M

Creating a welcoming environment for people is vital. First impressions mean a lot. I personally go up to everyone and introduce myself and let them know that I’m always down to go stunt or tumble with them and just try to create a warm atmosphere for them.

Peyton

I create a welcoming environment for new team members by making sure everyone feels included from the very beginning. I like introducing myself first, helping them feel comfortable during practices, and encouraging them even on hard days. I also try to be someone they can talk to or ask questions without feeling nervous. I think being positive, supportive, and treating everyone like family helps build strong team bonds and makes new athletes feel like they belong.

Brayden

I try to make people feel welcome by introducing myself and other people on the team. I try to give little tips when needed to help them feel at home.

Aven

I try to create a welcoming environment for new teammates by making them feel comfortable in the gym and starting conversations to get to know them better. I try to encourage everyone so we can build confidence and grow closer as a team. I also like inviting people over to my house and planning fun activities outside of practice so we can build friendships. Some of my best friends have come from doing that!

Xavier

Having just joined the team last season, I understand the pressure of being the new teammate. I try my hardest to help make new athletes feel welcomed and comfortable because that’s how I was treated.

Madison

I always introduce myself to new teammates and try to include them in conversations with others. By being friendly and encouraging, I hope to create a supportive environment where they can feel confident and connected.

Makayla

I try to create a welcoming environment for new team members by showing them that mistakes are perfectly okay. Knowing that even returning athletes make mistakes can help new teammates feel more comfortable and reassured. I also try to be encouraging and supportive so everyone feels included.
