Comeback Season! HPU Cheer Aims to Return to Daytona for the First Time in a Decade!

Ohana over everything. 

That’s the motto for Hawaii Pacific University Cheer as they gear up for a return to Daytona for the first time in a decade. 

Rewind to 2012. Fresh off winning the programs 19th and 20th NCA Titles (10 consecutive titles for Large Coed) and solidifying themselves among the winningest college cheer programs in history, the team received devastating news: HPU Cheer, at least at a competitive level, was no longer to be. 

“There were people there who weren’t seniors and were planning to be there for a couple more years, and then everybody that wanted to come,” said HPU alum Ryan Johnson. “It was so heartbreaking and devastating for a lot of people.”

Johnson has since made it his mission to bring the program back in all its glory. It took nearly a decade for the conversations to start happening, but now there’s no looking back.
