iC Superstar Gabi Butler-1As I write my first blog for Inside Cheerleading magazine, I am so excited about the year to come. I feel so honored to have been chosen by iC to chronicle my cheerleading journey. When I started cheering six years ago, I never imagined it would be such a big part of my life. I remember learning to do my first back handspring and thinking that was so hard. Now I am working on skills I only dreamed of being able to do! Watching athletes like Kiara Nowlin and Whitney Love inspired me to work hard. It’s so hard to believe that now others have found their own inspiration in watching me! I still think of myself as just a regular girl. It’s also amazing to see how much our SPORT has grown. I emphasize the word “sport” because whether the world wants to recognize it or not, cheerleading truly is a sport, and in my opinion, it’s one of the best sports today.

I was attending the amazing Camp Woodward in Pennsylvania when I got the email from Inside Cheerleading asking me to be a representative of their magazine. I knew that it would be a big responsibility because it is so important to set a good example to all the young people who join cheerleading every day. I was even more excited to have a place to share my journey this year. As most of you know, I have started with a new team this year called Trinity Athletics in Johns Creek, Ga. It’s a new gym and I’m so excited about my new teammates. I really felt it was the best for me and I am thrilled about the opportunity. More importantly, I love working with my new coaches Gianni and Tonya! I have already learned so much just in the short time that I have started training with them, and I’m sure this year will be full of new learning experiences. To me, that’s what cheerleading should be all about: having fun and learning new things!

iC Superstar Gabi Butler2I think the best part of these new experiences is all the new people I have been able to meet. There are so many amazing athletes in this sport that don’t get the recognition they deserve, and each of them has such amazing talent. Every time someone tells me about an obstacle they were able to overcome in cheerleading I feel so inspired. A lot of people ask me how I stay motivated to keep working hard. I just feel like that anything you are going to do in life should involve you trying your hardest to be the best you can be. Life can be so much fun if you focus on the positive things and stay away from negative energy. Negative energy causes too many problems. We need to treat each other with love and respect, and the world will be a better place!

This year is going to be an exciting time and I am truly honored to be able to share my journey with all of you through Inside Cheerleading. Just remember that we all go through good times and bad times. We need to help support each other not just in the good times, but also in the rough times as well. Everyone needs a helping hand or a shoulder to lean on. This year let’s all make it our goal to help one another to be the best we can be. I look forward to sharing all of my experiences this year and meeting all of you at competitions this year; and for those of you who have teams that are working to get to The Cheerleading Worlds, I hope to see all of you there in 2013!
